“Cleanliness is next to godliness” – a bit dramatic when talking about how well spruced you keep your office?
We don’t think so.
Imagine an important client standing outside your building, glancing up expecting to see the sun gleam off the windows. Instead they see dull grime, dirt and bird droppings. That’s not the first impression of your business that you want to portray and it does not inspire client confidence.
Clean windows show professionalism and respect for the environment and the people within it. Plus, not only does it lead to happy employees, but impressed clients too.
Do you feel productive in a dull, dirty environment? I doubt it. So to give your employees the greatest chance of peak performance in their jobs, allow them the basic right to pure daylight and a view beyond a mouldy window frame.
But don’t just take our word for it, according to Psychology Today exposure to natural light improves workplace performance. A study on the topic shows a strong relationship between workplace daylight exposure and office workers’ sleep, activity and quality of life.
Workers without daylight exposure reported lower scores on quality of life measures related to physical activity and vitality than their counterparts. They also had poorer outcomes in in measures of overall sleep quality, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction.
We wouldn’t want that for employees we respect and want to retain in good health.
Showing clients that you can maintain a clean environment and you care about attention to detail displays professionalism and encourages a grounded belief in your business. A client will far more likely respect your organisation if they leave knowing you have high cleanliness standards.
Employees will also walk through the doors with pride and respect the environment in which they work leading to improved productivity and feelings of wellbeing. Why not help create a work environment that contributes to a friendly, happy atmosphere? And of course who are we to deny our employees vitamin D and serotonin boosting sunlight?
