Historically, the Houndsditch Street follows the line of the outside edge of the ditch which once ran outside the Roman Wall of Londinium. The road took its name from the section of ditch between Bishopsgate and Aldgate.
The ditch was dug again in 1211 as a part of the defenses to 75 feet wide. By 1595 it was leveled and was first paved in 1603. At the turn of the 20th century, the street had become a thriving market in clothing and novelties, giving rise to one of London’s leading department stores, the Houndsditch Warehouse, dubbed the “Selfridges of the Jewish Quarter”.
