Is office cleaning essential for business or is it a luxury?

Whether your business is growing or you are under pressure to achieve more with fewer resources, we all have to assess what is essential for the company to run.  In that consideration, we tend to focus on what will deliver value to our customers and what will generate more sales. This raises an important question, is office cleaning a luxury or a necessity for business?
To help us answer this question we want to consider the business case for engaging an office cleaning company as well as the important health and safety questions.
First, let’s look at your team and resources. In order for your business to deliver the best possible products or service, what are the key activities that your team must be undertaking?
If you were to write these down and then mark next to each of them the priority level – high, medium or low – you would probably find that cleaning the office for your staff is a low priority but what is the impact on your team of working in poor environment?
According to the University of Minnesota, “Visual “noise” increases stress. A cluttered, dirty, or confusing environment can cause us to feel worried, sad, or helpless.”
Further to that in the study, “The Effect of Physical Environment on Mental Wellbeing”, the authors note that “Working adults spend a large portion of their day in the workplace. It is, therefore, important for individual wellbeing that the spaces in which people carry out their work are attractive {Maslow and Mintz 1956; Kaplan 1993; Shoemaker et al. 1992), comfortable, provide occasions for social interaction and networking, and create the conditions for individuals to be productive”
If you’re thinking of asking your staff to clean, consider again those essential key activities for them to be engaging in. Here is a quote from Greg McKeown, author of ‘Essentialism’,  who says that ‘It [Essentialism] is about making the wisest possible investment of your time and energy in order to operate at our highest point of contribution by doing only what is essential’.
This is also something to way up if you do decide to engage with an office cleaning company. Choosing the most trustworthy and professional business will mean that you can focus on what is essential for youto do rather than spending time managing the shortfall of an organisation that is not committed to the relationship with you.
Likewise for managing an independent cleaner which may look like a more cost effective option on paper but when you add in the hidden cost of management time and processing the necessary paperwork, the cost rises considerably – as well as the opportunity cost of your time not spent on the essential activities.
Further to the key activities and the mental state of your employees, there are health and safety considerations. You are required by law to provide a safe environment for your employees and meet regulations. This includes having the COSHH approved documentation for cleaning products.
Only you can decide whether engaging an office cleaning company is appropriate for your business but we hope that we have helped you consider the question. If you would like to discuss this further, we would be happy to answer any questions you may have and advise you on whether it is right for your business and possible solutions.
